Climbing Guide: New Directions Cliffs and Kern Slabs

brochure_frontThere are upwards of 100 climbs in this new guide to “New Directions Cliffs and Kern Slabs”.  This guide encompasses almost all of those climbs.  The map-like format makes it very easy to find any particular route, especially those located on New Directions Cliffs, which has several adjacent climbing faces, and which in the past has been difficult to decipher.

Wherever possible, route lengths, number of bolts, rappel stations, and required gear are pointed out. All the climbs are located only five miles upriver from the town of Kernville, and they are only a few hundred yards off the main road thus making this area readily accessible.  The climbing is on excellent granite.  Driving times from LA, Riverside and Fresno are as follows:

LA-via interstate 5 and CA 178, 3 hr, 164 miles

Riverside-via US 395 and CA 178, 3 hr 20 min, 184 miles

Fresno-via CA 99 and CA 178, 2 hr 50 min, 160 miles

The climbing is year-around but can be hot in the summer.  Elevation of the area is 3200 ft.  If the sun is shining it is a perfect place for fall, winter and spring climbing.

The Kern River is adjacent to the climbing and offers rafting, kayaking and fishing.  Numerous campgrounds with picnic tables, water, campfire circles and toilet facilities are nearby.

The town of Kernville has numerous dining and drinking opportunities including a local brewery.  Come on up and have some fun!
